Class Blog

THIS IS IMPORTANT.

As this blog is not being updated and no one is issuing any complaints or causing any uproar, we are going to take a poll on whether this class blog is going to continue to be used or not - rather defeats the purpose if no one will visit the blog right?

Those who have any comments feel free to speak your mind..
At least leave a message behind if you visit the website, so we can keep a reccord of who is visiting the site.

The result will be posted by the end of this week.

THIS IS IMPORTANT.

NE POSTER

Hey people! This is Shi Ting. NE rep.
I'm sorry, I didn't know about the deadline for the poster until last weekend.

Anyway, because all twenty something of us can't possibly stay back together to stare at a single laptop and do a lame poster, we'll make use of internal economies of scale: division of labour.

All of us will have to do some research (except Justin, Yingwei and I, because we went for the outing) and this information will be included in the poster. So please include reliable info but don't plagiarize.

Please send it to my e-mail (shi_ting7@hotmail.com) by Thursday night. 21st May. FRIDAY NIGHT, 22/5/09.

I'm going to randomly group people to do the following points, and if you want to, you can switch partners with others or whatever. The main thing is that you guys have to send me the information of these 12 points

Place assigned: Jalan Besar

History of place/district:
  1. Why is the place named so? (Shalini, Vada)
  2. Meaning of name (Xueying, Miuyen)
  3. From colonial days till the 60s and 70s till present (Melanie, Hanif, Regan)
  4. Personalities in the past (Steven, Xin Yee)
  5. What was there in the past? (Siti Nur Atiqah, Nabilah)
  6. Past industries/trades in the area (Beatrice, Esther)
Past/Present
  1. Anything of value; Reflections of the importance of place (Suba, Aisha)
  2. Familiar/Historical landmarks (Haiza, Rifhan)
  3. Buildings (new/old); Architecture (Nuraisyah, Hidayah)
  4. Parks/open spaces (Audrey, Ben)
  5. Markets/malls (Elena, Amalina)
  6. Peculiar trades/businesses (Saiful, Joseph)

I'll collate the information from you guys. This won't take much of your time. Just type a few sentences/ a paragraph about your point and send it over.

(If there's really nothing to say about your point, and you're unable to send me anything because Jalan Besar is a really boring place, please still inform me through SMS or something. However, please don't use this as an excuse not to contribute anything!)

We'll be using the photos taken by Yingwei, Justin and I.

We have photos of the Jalan Besar Stadium, Jalan Besar Food Centre, Shophouses, New World Centre, Da Lian Mian store, Xiao Long Baos, etc. So to those people doing research, if it's applicable to your point, you can write about these things.

I'm having slight fever now and I wanna skip school everyday but I probably can't. Oh boooo. Eh wait this has no link.

I'll send the photos and information to Donovan to design the poster, because he seems to have (gay) photoshop skills. Those people with such skills can volunteer to help him as well. The poster should be two powerpoint slides long. (And since it's just the first draft of the poster just anyhow do first? Hopefully can delay and hand up next week)

Additional info:

The final draft will have to be submitted in July, after Mid Year Exams.

The posters will eventually be printed by the NE Committee and will be displayed from 5th August as part of the National Day celebrations.

SMS me if you want to ask me anything! I have unlimited smses. Yay me!
Please cooperate. Thanks! :D

CIP UPDATE

HI everyone!! This is MELANIE =D your UNDEAD Service Learning Representative.
Here are some updates on our undecided CIP projects for June!

BLESSINGS IN A BAG

Hi Melanie

Apologies for this late reply and on behalf of the team, we would like to thank you for your kind support. We are really honored to hear that you and your friends are interested to volunteer with us.

Just a brief information about Blessings in a Bag, we are a Singapore not-for-profit, non-governmental organisation with the aim to help the underprivileged children all across Asia. What we do here is to collect donations from the public, mostly of children basic needs, sort them and clean them (laundry), before shipping all these generous donations to our beneficiaries over in Philippines, Cambodia and Indonesia.

You mentioned that you and your friends are interested in communicating with children, we regret to say that since all our beneficiaries are overseas, we do not directly interact with them. We do so by sending them letters through our sister project called Scribbly Friends. We are still in the planning stages for another visit to any of our beneficiaries but due to the Swine Flu and several other travel warnings, we will most likely postpone the trip in June until the condition is safer for any trip.

A batch of students, also doing their Community Involvement Programme, just started to volunteer with us. They will come every Sunday to assist us with the sortings and packing boxes of donations to be shipped over. So do let us know if this is feasible for you and your friends as well. Please do not hesitate to contact me or Darren Lin (darrenlin@blessingsinabag.com), if you need any other information or details.

We are more than happy to help! Hear from you soon and have a nice day! :) Cheers!ArbellaStreet Team CoordinatorBlessings in a Bag
